Atticus Dragging the Lake 3 Review
Atticus’s third in a series of pop punk compilation albums, Dragging The Lake 3 covers a lot of musical ground as the 24 track CD plays through. Many different songs are worth looking at on this CD. Bike Riders by Lucero reminds me of a song by Rancid in the Radio Radio Radio time period. This album also has a crazy rendition of Living in America by The Sounds, dubbed the Andy Wallace mix. This version sounds a bit more synth poppy than before, but every version never ceases to impress me. If You like Living in America, I suggest checking this version out. Rise Against rises to the occasion (bad pun, I know) with their song “Dancing for Rain”. There is strong presentation and it a distinct Rise Against feel in the sound. The Song “Part of Your Body is Made Out Of Rock” sounds interesting to say the least. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something there. Just check it out and you’ll see what I mean. “Smile, you’ve won” by Lydia is interesting. When I heard the beginning, I expected a boring depthless song. But as the song progresses, there is real talent shown. Bratcore by VCR sounds like a trip into the mind of a synthesized madman. It is definitely worth a look.
One thing I took into consideration before purchasing or listening to the album is something said about it in a review on Tower.com “While the previous volumes featured younger performers alongside a handful of veteran acts--the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Down By Law, and Rocket from the Crypt, among others--2005's DRAGGING THE LAKE 3 presents only Blink 182 and MxPx as elder statesmen. This allows for the spotlight to shine on relatively new bands, including Taking Back Sunday.” This gives room for many new and unknown bands to get their name and music out in the open. This by all means is a great idea. When you have all this talent, why hide it? With bands such as Alexisonfire, Motion City Soundtrack, VCR, Street Dogs, Lucero, and Death Cab For Cutie, Dragging the Lake 3 has a lot going for it. In relation to overall feel, this album goes in many different directions, yet has a positive focus which allows it to be so free in its exploration of Pop Punk and Rock.Everytime I listen to this cd in its entirety, I find something New to like about it. Street Dogs remind of the Bounncing Souls and the Taking Back Sunday song "Number Five with a Bullet" is nice. Give it a look, at such a price there's no excuse not to.
