The Fight Nothing New Since Rock N Roll Review
Written by: Marcus Bass
The First full length EP by The Fight “Nothing New Since Rock N Roll” is a well done piece filled with melodic, fast and fun pop punk. Coming from Dudley all the way in the U.K., The Fight consists of Drummer Jak, Bassist Matt, Guitarist Scott and the beautiful guitar and vocalist Kate (K8). Kerrang! Magazine dubbed this band as the next big thing. I don’t think they’re far off! It also helps that they are very endearing people. I got a chance to meet them at the 2005 Warped Tour before their show. I first read about this random find of a band in AMP magazine, in an interview with K8, talking about how they first came to a success by passing a demo tape to a New Found Glory roadie. Chad Gilbert (guitarist of NFG) eventually got his hands on it and he must’ve liked what he heard. He gave the demo to Fat Mike over at Fat Wreck Chords and they released an EP titled "Home Is Where the Hate Is . Now, they’re on Repossession Records and released this great album. When you think of women fronted punk acts, Blondie, Tsunami Bomb, The Distillers, Sahara Hotnights or even The Donnas come to mind. With the proper amount of exposure this band could go up with the ranks. Their music is powerful and carries heavy themes of young, sporadic and intense rock tunes.
The track list features an impressive set of songs. It really impresses me how straight forward the messages of many of their songs are. The first song “Can’t Be Bothered” literally speaks to me and how much of a Lazy bloke I can be. The opening lines being:
What's the fucking point? When I'm a lazy sod I won't go to college And I won't get a job I sleep right through the day I won't even get dressed My parents go to work and Try and put me to the test
Now, if that doesn’t speak to me, I don’t know what does (except, I am going to College).Karaoke Star is an interesting one as well. It seems like a stepping out of the mold song. It talks about not being the Karaoke Star, not being the one Singing the same old recycled formula like Britney Spears, but rather singing to your own tune and meaning it! "Housewreck" is simply a song about rowdy house parties and all the things kids do when the 'rent's aren't around. There are many more mentionable songs ranging from “No more Legend” and “Stage Skool Kids” to the first single off the Album “Can't Be Bothered”, "Revolution Calling" and “Don’t tell me”. This is a fantastic album overall, British accents and all. The Fight has quickly been added to the list of my favorite bands and I look forward to hearing more of what they have to offer. Check out The Fight’s “Nothing New Since Rock N Roll” album. I highly suggest it.
